Accessibility MCP servers: which to use with Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot
An accessibility MCP server lets your AI coding assistant scan pages and components for WCAG issues and check its own fixes. WebAbility MCP is free: add https://mcp.webability.io/mcp to any MCP client and the scan tools work with no API key, or run it locally with npx -y @webability/mcp. Free open-source servers built on axe-core include A11y MCP and a11y-mcp. Deque, AudioEye and Evinced ship MCP servers for their customers.
Facts on this page were checked against each project’s own documentation on . WebAbility publishes this page and maintains WebAbility MCP.
How to add an accessibility MCP server in one step
The hosted WebAbility server exposes 13 tools; the local package exposes 16, including source mapping and scan history. Use the local one to scan localhost.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http webability https://mcp.webability.io/mcpClaude Code plugin (run both)
/plugin marketplace add snayyar00/webability-mcp
/plugin install webability-accessibility@webabilityCursor, Windsurf, VS Code (.cursor/mcp.json or your client's MCP config)
{
"mcpServers": {
"webability": { "url": "https://mcp.webability.io/mcp" }
}
}claude.ai and Claude Desktop: add https://mcp.webability.io/mcp/auth as a custom connector to use visual_audit and full audits, or https://mcp.webability.io/mcp for the free scan tools only. Cursor and VS Code can use the same sign-in URL. The hosted server has 13 tools.
Local (stdio, scans localhost)
npx -y @webability/mcpStep-by-step guides per client: Cursor, Claude Code and VS Code.
Accessibility MCP servers compared
Six servers, by where they run, what you need before the first scan, the engine underneath, and the licence. Each name links to the project’s own documentation.
WebAbility MCP
WebAbility
- Runs
- Hosted at https://mcp.webability.io/mcp, or locally over stdio with npx -y @webability/mcp
- Access
- Free. No API key for the scan and check tools (fair-use limits). A free account unlocks visual_audit, start_audit and get_audit: sign in through https://mcp.webability.io/mcp/auth, which asks for sign-in until you are signed in. An AI agent with its own AgentMail inbox can sign up on its own: it chooses Sign in with AgentID on the WebAbility sign-in page (https://app.webability.io/auth/signin) and gets its own free account, with no human account or API key.
- Engine and licence
- axe-core, HTML_CodeSniffer and WebAbility detectors merged into one issue list, plus fix generation and fix verification. MCP client is MIT on GitHub; the scanning service is not open source.
axe MCP Server
Deque
- Runs
- npm or Docker, connects to Deque
- Access
- Paid. Part of the axe DevTools for Web subscription; API key or OAuth credentials
- Engine and licence
- axe-core, with analyze and remediate tools. Commercial.
AudioEye MCP server
AudioEye
- Runs
- Locally, drives Chrome on your machine
- Access
- AudioEye account with Testing SDK access; pricing not listed on the docs page
- Engine and licence
- AudioEye Testing SDK. Commercial.
Evinced Web and Mobile MCP servers
Evinced
- Runs
- Connects to Evinced with a service account
- Access
- Evinced account, service ID and API key from your Evinced representative
- Engine and licence
- Evinced scanning for web, iOS and Android. Commercial.
A11y MCP (a11y-mcp-server)
Ronan Takizawa (community)
- Runs
- Locally with npx -y a11y-mcp-server, Node.js 18+
- Access
- Free, no account or key
- Engine and licence
- axe-core with Puppeteer. MIT.
a11y-mcp
priyankark (community)
- Runs
- Locally with npx a11y-mcp, Node.js 22.12+
- Access
- Free, no account or key
- Engine and licence
- axe-core. MPL 2.0.
How to choose
- Your company already licenses an accessibility platform. Use that vendor’s server. Findings then match the reports your team already reads.
- You want to start today with no account and no key. Point your client at
https://mcp.webability.io/mcp. WebAbility MCP runs axe-core, HTML_CodeSniffer and its own detectors, returns framework-aware fixes, andverify_fixre-checks the element after the edit. - You want a small open-source axe-core wrapper. A11y MCP (MIT) and a11y-mcp (MPL 2.0) run locally and you can read all of their code.
- You need to scan a page on localhost. Use a server that runs on your machine:
npx -y @webability/mcpor one of the open-source servers.
Questions developers ask
What is an accessibility MCP server?
An accessibility MCP server exposes web accessibility testing tools over the Model Context Protocol. Your AI coding assistant (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code Copilot, Windsurf) calls those tools to scan a URL or an HTML snippet for WCAG issues, then reads the findings and edits your code. It replaces the switch to a browser extension during development. It does not replace a manual audit.
Which accessibility MCP server should I use?
It depends on what you already have. If your team licenses axe DevTools, AudioEye or Evinced, use that vendor's MCP server so results match your existing reports. If you want to start now without an account or a key, WebAbility MCP is free at https://mcp.webability.io/mcp and adds fix generation and fix verification to the scan. If you want a small open-source axe-core wrapper you can read end to end, A11y MCP (MIT) and a11y-mcp (MPL 2.0) both run locally.
Is there a free accessibility MCP server?
Yes. WebAbility MCP is free: add https://mcp.webability.io/mcp to any MCP client and the scan and check tools work with no API key, under fair-use limits. A free WebAbility account lifts the limits and unlocks the vision audit and audit report tools. A11y MCP and a11y-mcp are free open-source servers that run axe-core on your machine.
Is there an MCP server for WCAG testing?
Yes. Every server on this page tests against WCAG success criteria. WebAbility MCP splits results into issues (safe to act on) and incomplete (needs a human), the same way axe-core does. Its 13 hosted tools include scan_page, scan_html, flow_scan, check_color_contrast, check_aria, generate_ai_fix and verify_fix.
How do I add an accessibility MCP server to Cursor?
Open Cursor Settings, go to MCP, and add a server with the URL https://mcp.webability.io/mcp. Or put {"mcpServers": {"webability": {"url": "https://mcp.webability.io/mcp"}}} in .cursor/mcp.json. To run it on your machine instead, use the command npx -y @webability/mcp.
How do I add accessibility testing to Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add --transport http webability https://mcp.webability.io/mcp. Or install it as a Claude Code plugin: run /plugin marketplace add snayyar00/webability-mcp, then /plugin install webability-accessibility@webability. Then ask Claude to scan a page or a component for WCAG issues.
Is there a free axe-core MCP server?
Yes. A11y MCP (npx -y a11y-mcp-server) and a11y-mcp (npx a11y-mcp) are free and run axe-core locally. WebAbility MCP also runs axe-core, together with HTML_CodeSniffer and its own detectors, and is free hosted at https://mcp.webability.io/mcp or locally with npx -y @webability/mcp. Deque's axe MCP Server is part of a paid axe DevTools subscription.
Can an accessibility MCP server scan localhost?
A server that runs on your machine can scan localhost directly: run WebAbility MCP locally with npx -y @webability/mcp, or use A11y MCP or a11y-mcp. A hosted server cannot reach your machine without a tunnel. For a component that is not served yet, scan_html scans an HTML string with no URL at all.
Does an MCP scan make my site WCAG compliant?
No. Automated rules catch only part of WCAG. They cannot judge whether alt text is meaningful, whether focus order is logical, or whether a screen reader user can complete a task. Use the MCP to catch and fix machine-checkable issues while you build, then test with a keyboard and a screen reader, and get an expert audit when you need to prove conformance.
